Dr. Scialli
reviews EPA IRIS document on trichloroacetic acid
.
Tetra Tech Sciences’ Anthony Scialli served on a panel that reviewed the EPA Integrated Science Risk Summary (IRIS) assessment of trichloroacetic acid. Dr. Scialli was on the panel for his expertise in reproductive and developmental toxicology. The previous EPA risk assessment for trichloroacetic acid used a developmental study to set the reference dose; however, the current reference dose was set using hepatic necrosis as the end point. The panel did not agree on EPA’s designation of trichloroacetic acid as a “likely human carcinogen.” Dr. Scialli explained that trichloroacetic acid has only been shown to produce cancer in mice, not in rats, and that there are no human data. He was joined in his dissent by three other panel members.
