Dr. Gibb to attend WHO meeting in Rome June 10-12, 2009

Dr. Herman Gibb has been invited by the World Health Organization to participate in the Country Studies Task Force of the Foodborne Epidemiology Reference Group (FERG). The meeting will be held in Rome, Italy at the headquarters of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations. The goal of FERG is to estimate the global burden of foodborne illness by 2012. Dr. Gibb currently chairs the Chemical Task Force of the FERG. The Country Studies Task Force will do the groundwork that will lead to the development of new methods to consistently monitor the burden of foodborne disease at an individual country level. Pilot studies will be completed in a range of different countries, in order to develop selection criteria for suitable country sites and identify the sites of the key pilot projects. See the Lancet article for a more complete description of the work of the FERG.
