National Research Council Symposium on Pathway-Based Risk Assessment

On May 11-13, 2009, Tetra Tech Sciences’ Annette Iannucci attended a symposium entitled Toxicity Pathway-Based Risk Assessment: Preparing for Paradigm Change. The symposium was planned by an ad hoc committee overseen by the National Research Council Standing Committee on Risk Analysis Issues and Reviews and was sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Plenary sessions of the symposium highlighted applications of new toxicity testing paradigms discussed in the 2007 National Research Council report entitled Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: a Vision and Strategy. The new paradigms involve prediction of toxicity by examining key perturbations in biological pathways using methods such as computational biology and in vitro test arrays.
