Does Vitamin D During Pregnancy Prevent Childhood Asthma?

Tetra Tech Sciences’ Anthony Scialli has been appointed to the data safety and monitoring board for a randomized clinical trial of vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy versus placebo in the prevention of childhood asthma and allergic disease. The study, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH, is being conducted in St. Louis, Boston, and San Diego and will be coordinated by Harvard Medical School. The intervention will be 4400 IU vitamin D per day compared to the 400 IU/day contained in standard prenatal vitamins. Dr. Scialli, selected for the data safety monitoring board as an obstetrician and reproductive toxicologist, worked with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to produce guidelines for the treatment of asthma during pregnancy.
