Grand Rounds at George Washington University

Tetra Tech Sciences’ Anthony Scialli presented Grand Rounds to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at George Washington University on October 22, 2008. Dr. Scialli’s topic was Principles of Teratology, and he focused on some common misconceptions about the association between medications and congenital anomalies. Dr. Scialli indicated that pregnant women will continue to be exposed to medications because medications may be needed for the health of the mother and because half of pregnancies are unplanned, resulting in inadvertent exposures in women of child-bearing potential. Dr. Scialli also emphasized the importance of exposure level in determining potential adverse pregnancy outcomes and the use of experimental animal studies to investigate the relationship between exposure level and outcome. The presentation ended with a discussion of information resources and alternatives to the FDA Pregnancy category system. The Grand Rounds was attended by faculty, residents, and students of the department in which Dr. Scialli holds a Clinical Professorship.
