Dr. Kim completed an air toxics risk assessment
for the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control
District (LMAPCD). This study evaluated cancer
and noncancer risks for 78 chemicals monitored
in 6 locations in the Louisville metropolitan
area during the period 2001-2005. Eleven chemicals
posed the greatest cancer risks: vinyl chloride,
1,3-butadiene, acrylonitrile, methyl t-butyl
ether, chloroform, benzene, carbon tetrachloride,
ethyl acrylate, tetrachloroethene, 1,4-dichlorobenzene,
and naphthalene. The primary risk drivers for
noncancer effects were chloroprene, 1,3-butadiene
and acrylonitrile. This work was funded by LMAPCD
through a grant from the U.S. EPA. The West Louisville
Air Toxics Study Risk Assessment was released
to the general public on November 29, 2006. Read
