Mercury Study in Ukraine
Sciences recently participated in an evaluation of mercury exposure to employees of a mercury recycling facility in the city of Gorlovka in eastern Ukraine. Other scientists participating in the investigation were from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the Donetsk Technical University, and the Institute for Occupational Health in Kiev. Participants in the study provided answers to questions on occupation, fish consumption, residence, and other variables of interest and provided blood, urine, hair, and nail samples. Soil, dust, and wipe samples were collected both from the facility and from residences. Sediment, coal, and water samples were also collected. An investigation was made into morbidity and mortality data for the area to determine the feasibility of an epidemiologic study. For more information about the study,
