SIN 2: Environmental compliance services

Sciences International has an active environmental audit practice that assesses compliance with applicable federal and state environmental regulations and evaluates the likely liabilities of site or facility environmental contamination. Our engineers and scientists regularly evaluate properties and operations to assess the environmental consequences of past and current activities.

Specific Sciences' services that could be of interest include the following:

  1. Compliance Audits
  2. Liability Audits
  3. Site Investigations

Compliance Audits

Sciences routinely conducts detailed audits to evaluate past and current compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. After evaluating the results, using Sciences' proprietary compliance audit questionnaire completed during the site visit, we produce a report that details problem areas and solutions. We also often produce a report that is used by management to identify more cost-effective and efficient means for recognizing and reducing future environmental liabilities. This report can be used by those in charge of environmental matters to operate a program that complies with government regulations and to minimize the inadvertent release of chemicals into the environment.

Liability Audits

One of Sciences' strengths is in designing carefully prepared assessment to narrow scientific uncertainties and to evaluate environmental pathways that may result in exposures and liabilities while assessing the risks posed by facility operations. Our scientists and engineers review past and present operations; discuss activities and operations with employees who are knowledgeable about environmental matters; review permits, the results of any monitoring programs that may exist, and other relevant material; and combine the findings to produce a report that identifies all potential environmental liabilities, recommends actions that the facility can take to minimize or avert loss, and estimates the cost of correction. We qualify our conclusions by carefully indicating the likelihood that such exposure will occur as well as the conditions that would have to exist before chemicals will be released. Finally, we speak to regulatory officials, when necessary, while preserving the confidential nature of the inquiry.

Site Investigations

Occasionally, it is necessary to gather additional information about a site before judgments can be made as to existence and extent of environmental problems. Sciences is experienced in supervising the collection of information about the site and its surroundings through groundwater, soil, or air monitoring programs. To minimize the cost to the client, we normally select local contractors who install groundwater wells, take soil borings, or perform air monitoring or sampling. However, we provide the overall strategic planning and analysis, manage and coordinate all phases of the work, and document the findings in a complete report to the client. If remediation is required, Sciences can interface with the engineering firms selected to conduct the remediation by the client. Sciences staff has assisted in numerous assessments at sites nationwide under a variety of federal and state programs.
